How does industry judge whether a chemical has a high or low impact on the Environment?

Every chemical has some impact on the environment, even water can have a detrimental effect.

At Evans Vanodine, we have developed an innovative system for classifying each of our products according to their overall environmental impact. Our system scores products based on eight different criteria. The criteria selected are used to create a holistic life cycle view of the processes and product and also align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Every product in the Evans range is analysed using the GreenTick system. The lower the overall product score, the lower the impact on the environment. Products which achieve a low impact rating are identified with a GreenTick logo on the label.

Impact of product in use

Uses an approximation of what a typical daily usage rate for the particular product may be if used with the correct dilution rates and as suggested on the labels and information sheets. Also accounts for how the used product is disposed of; evaporated or to drain.
Aligns with UN SDG 12.

Impact of packaging used

How much packaging would be required per year based on average uses and the type of packaging used.
Aligns with UN SDG 9.

Learn More

Impact of hazard class

The Environmental Hazard Classification of the finished product (H400 set of phrases). These will appear on the labelling and SDS.

Learn More

PH balance of product

Considers both the undiluted and in use pH value. Extreme pH can result in more environmental damage therefore scores higher.

Learn More

Impact of raw materials

Analyses the raw materials going into the product and how harmful they are. Classified using categories found on the Guidance for Responsible Public Procurement of Cleaning Products, from data collated by various UK and European chemical specialists.

Learn More

Impact of energy used

Accounts for the time taken to manufacture, test and fill the products; the longer the process takes the more energy intensive the process.

Learn More

Impact of transportation

Factors in the transportation impacts of what is being purchased. Ready-to-Use products score higher than concentrated, due to the amount of water being transported and the amount of extra packaging and product required to obtain an equivalent amount of solution from a concentrated or super concentrated product.

Learn More

Water used to
manufacture

Water is a valuable resource and is used to produce many of our products. There are two different types of water that can be utilised: raw water or deionised water. Deionised water, due to having to undergo extra processing, has more of an impact than raw water.
Aligns with UN SDG 14.

How does industry judge whether a chemical has a high or low impact on the Environment?

We want you to be able to make a choice based on your needs. By indicating which of our products is the lowest impact gives you clear information when choosing your product range.

We would always advocate however that the best product will not always be a GreenTick product but the impact to the Environment can be limited by using the correct product for the correct task. This stops overuse, ensures the task is completed as required and to the standard required.
